Configure SharePoint Server 2013 farm

​Create a new SharePoint Server farm

Launch SharePoint Server Configuration Wizard on the first server of farm and click Next


Choose Create a new server farm and click Next 


Specify SQL Server database server and SharePoint farm account (not setup account)

Note: currently SharePoint farm account have no permission on SQL Server, it will be granted during configuration as Configuration Wizard is launched from the SharePoint setup account which have appropriate permissions


Specify Passphrase (in will be prompted to add SharePoint servers to the farm) and click Next 


Optionaly specify Central Administration application port number and authentification provider and click Next


Verify settings and click Next


After configuration is finished click Finish and login to Central Administration with the SharePoint farm account 


Note: if you get an access denied error just open Central Administration one more time 


Also you may notice that some buttons are disabled. To fix that you have to sign-out and sign in to SharePoint server again and launch Central Administration using Run as administrator

Notice: also I've faced several times this problem with non IE browser


Add server to SharePoint farm

Launch SharePoint Server Configuration Wizard on the other server of farm and click Next


Choose Connect to existing server farm and click Next 


Enter Passphrase and click Next


Verify settings and click Next

Optionally click advanced and choose Use this machine to host website if you are going to transfer Central Administration to this server 


Configure SharePoint farm services

After all servers are connected to farm open Central Administration and configure services on servers in System Setings - Servers in Farm according chosen topology

Configure Excel Service Application

​Create Excel Service system account

1. Login to the domain controller with Active Directory administrator account and launch Active Directory Users and Computers console


2. Rightclick on Users OU, choose New - User and create system account for Excel Services application


Register excel services user as managed account

Login to SharePoint server with SharePoint farm administrator credentials, launch Central Administration and go to Security - Configure managed accounts


Click Register Managed Account and specify Excel Servies system account

Create Excel Services Service Application

Go to Application Management - Manage Service Applications and click New - Excel Services Application

Create New Web Application

Login to server with ​SharePoint setup account and launch Central Administration, go to Application Management - Manage web applications and click New


Click OK

Install SharePoint Language Packs

​Download required language packs from Microsoft Download Center and launch setup
Accept license terms anc click Continue


After language pack is installed do not click Finish and leave this window until language pack is installed to other servers in farm 


Note: if you click Finish before language pack is installed on all servers in farm you'll receive the folowing error


After language pack is installed on all servers finish configuration

Install and Configure NLB

​Install NLB feature

Login to SharePoint server with local administrator credentials and launch Server Manager
Go to Manage - Add Roles and Features and click Next twice


Choose Network Load Balancing at the Features section and click Add Features when asked to add Network Load Balancing Tool


Click Next and Install feature


Install NLB on every SharePoint front-end server


Configure NLB cluster

 Launch Network Load Balancing Manager on any front-end server, rightclick at the Network Load Balancing Clusters and choose New Cluster


Type first front-end server name in the Host field and click Connect, ensure that it's network interface detected and shown in the table below and click Next 


Click Next at the next screen


Click Add and specify cluster virtual IP (this IP must not be assigned to any other resources in the network)


Verify NLB configuration and click Next 


Stay default port rule settings and click Finish


Add hosts to cluster

After cluster is added rightclick on it's name and choose Add Host To Cluster 


Add second fron-end server name and click Connect


stay default host parameters and click Next


stay default port rule and click Finish

Configure App Catalog

​Add CNAME to DNS zone

Go to DNS Server and add a new A record with * in Name field and SharePoint front-end IP in FQDN



Provision SharePoint Services

Login to the SharePoint server with SharePoint farm account credentials, launch SharePoint Management Shell as administrator and execute the following command

Get-SPServiceInstance | where{$_.GetType().Name -eq "AppManagementServiceInstance" -or $_.GetType().Name -eq "SPSubscriptionSettingsServiceInstance"} | Start-SPServiceInstance

After commands are executed you may check this servces in the SharePoint Central Administration  System Settings – Manage Services on Server


Execute folowwing commands in SharePoint Management Shell

$appPoolAppSvc = New-SPServiceApplicationPool -Name AppServiceAppPool -Account $account
$appPoolSubSvc = New-SPServiceApplicationPool -Name SettingsServiceAppPool -Account $account
$appAppSvc = New-SPAppManagementServiceApplication -ApplicationPool $appPoolAppSvc -Name AppServiceApp -DatabaseName Appmanagement_Service_DB
$proxyAppSvc = New-SPAppManagementServiceApplicationProxy -ServiceApplication $appAppSvc
$appSubSvc = New-SPSubscriptionSettingsServiceApplication –ApplicationPool $appPoolSubSvc –Name SettingsServiceApp –DatabaseName SubscriptionSettings_Service_DB
$proxySubSvc = New-SPSubscriptionSettingsServiceApplicationProxy –ServiceApplication $appSubSvc

After commands are executed you may check this servces in the SharePoint Central Administration Application Management – Manage Service Applications


Configure App URLs

Open SharePoint Central Administration and go to Apps – Cnfigure App URLs
Specify App domain (must match zone CNAME from the first step) and random App Prefix


Configure Organization App Catalog

Go to Apps – Manage App Catalog, select Create new App catalog site and click OK


Specify App Catalog Site Collection Properties and click OK

Configure Alternate Access Mappings

Login to the SharePoint server with SharePoint farm account credentials and launch SharePoint Administration Center.
Go to Application Management – Configure Alternate Access Mapping


Select Web Application and click Edit Public URLs

Add zone address and click Save

Add new zone in DNS

​Login to DNS server with domain administrator credentials, go to Server Manager - DNS
Rightclick on the server name and choose DNS Manager


Rightclick at Forward Lookup Zones and choose Add New


Click Next


Leave default settings and click Next 


One more Next with default settings


Enter Zone name and click Next


Again Next with default settings


... Finish


Add A record to DNS zone

Rightclick at the zone name and choose New Host (A or AAAA)


Leave blank Name, specify destination server IP address and click Add Host

Install SharePoint Server 2013

​Add SharePoint setup account to local administrators group

Login to server with either local or domain administrator account credentials and open Server Manager
Choose Tools - Computer Management and expand Local Users and Groups - Groups node
Doubleclick at the Administrators group and add SharePoint setup account

Note: this account will be used as SharePoint system account but not as application pool identity

Add sharepoint system account 


Install Windows Server Updates


Login to the server with SharePoint setup account and install all available updates for Windows Server

Note: you will get an error on the next step if ignore installing updates


Install SharePoint Server Prerequisites

Login to the server with SharePoint setup account credentials and run SharePoint Server 2013 installer


Choose Install software prerequisites and click Next


Accept license terms and click Next


You will be prompted to restart server several times during installation


Click Finish after installation is complete


Install SharePoint Server 2013

Run SharePoint Server 2013 installer, click Install SharePoint Server and enter Product key  


Accept license terms and click Continue


Choose Complete and click Install Now 

Note: you’ll not be able to change it after installation. If you choose Standalone you’ll not be able to add another server to the farm or store data in a separate database server


After installation is complete click Close to run the Configuration Wizard

Install SQL Server 2012

​Login to server with either local or domain administrator credentials and launch SQL Server installation media and chooce Installation - New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to existing installation.

View through setup support report and click OK

Verify product key and click Next

Product key 

Accept license terms and click Next

License terms 

Check Include SQL Server updates and click Next

After updates are installed click Next

Updates installed 

Choose SQL Server Feature installation and click Next

Feature installation 

Choose Database engine services and Management tools and click Next

Feature selection 

Review the report and click Next

Setup report 

Specify instance id (or stay default) and click Next

Instance ID 

Review the disk space summary and click Next

Disk sumary 

If you are going to deploy any SQL Server applications which will use external data than you should specify domain user accounts. Owervise stay default local accounts and click Next

Add current user account to administrators...


Choose data directories and click Next

Data directories 

Choose if you want to send error reports to Microsoft and click Next

Error reports 

Review the report and click Next

Installation report 

Ensure that all required components are checked and click Install


After installation is complete click Close

Installation complete 


Configure Max degree of parallelism property

Launch SQL Server Management Studio, connect to server and rightclick on the instance

SQL Server Management Studio 

Choose Properties - Advanced and set Max degree of parallelism property to 1

Add SharePoint setup account


Expand Security and click New login...

New login 

Select SharePoint setup account from Active Directory and assign securityadmin and dbcreator roles



Open firewall ports

Either disable firewall or open 1433 port
